Vessels of the River's Pulse (2024)
Bisqueware, drift wood
Dimension variable
The sculptural composition encapsulates the essence of life in Kuching, Sarawak, depicting the daily rhythms along the river that sustain its inhabitants. The intricately woven patterns on the clay vessels mirror the rich cultural tapestry of the city, whispering stories of a community that has learned to flourish in symbiosis with the natural world. The contrast between the handmade vessels and the weathered wood echoes the interplay of transient human experiences and the timeless splendour of the environment.
This artwork is a testament to the resilience and creativity of Kuching's inhabitants, celebrating the moments that shape the lives of those who have forged an unbreakable bond with nature, drawing sustenance, inspiration, and wisdom from the river's ever-flowing waters, a constant reminder of the interconnectedness between humans and the natural world that surrounds them.

Sherlyn Tang creates works that illuminate the essence of the human experience, capturing fleeting moments that define our existence. Through her ceramic practice, she investigates the concept of the presence of absence, a theme resonating with the human condition. Her works transcend the physical, becoming vessels for philosophical, emotional, and perceptual exploration. She taps into the collective consciousness by delving into universal themes of memory, fragility, and beauty found in the transient.
